Global Languages at St. Joan’s School

Mandarin as Third Language | French as Second Language

At St. Joan’s School, we prepare students for a connected, multicultural world through strong foreign language education. In addition to English and Indian languages, we offer:

  • French as a Second Language – starting from KG
  • Mandarin as a Third Language – starting from Class V

This structured language pathway reflects our commitment to the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), which encourages multilingualism, global competence, and cultural awareness.

Why Learning French and Mandarin Matters

1. Global Opportunities

French and Mandarin are among the most widely spoken and economically important languages in the world. Proficiency in these languages opens doors to:

  • International higher education
  • Global careers in business, technology, diplomacy, tourism, and design
  • Study-abroad and exchange programmes
  • Cross-border friendships and collaborations

2. Cognitive & Academic Benefits

Research shows that learning additional languages:

  • Strengthens memory and concentration
  • Improves problem-solving and creativity
  • Enhances English vocabulary and grammar
  • Builds confidence in communication

3. Cultural Understanding

Language learning is not just about words—it builds:

  • Respect for diverse cultures
  • Empathy and global citizenship
  • Awareness of world history, art, and traditions

Our Language Pathway

French – Second Language (From KG Onwards)

  • Early exposure through songs, stories, and play-based learning
  • Focus on speaking, listening, reading, and writing
  • Age-appropriate grammar and vocabulary
  • Cultural activities, festivals, and projects
  • Preparation for higher-level proficiency in senior classes

Mandarin – Third Language (From Class V Onwards)

  • Introduction to spoken Mandarin and Chinese characters
  • Focus on pronunciation, tones, and practical conversation
  • Cultural immersion through music, calligraphy, and celebrations
  • Opportunities to participate in China-linked programmes and competitions

How We Teach

Our language classrooms are interactive and engaging:

  • Trained and certified language teachers
  • Audio-visual resources and digital tools
  • Activity-based learning and role play
  • Cultural events and language days
  • Emphasis on real-life communication

Students are encouraged to speak, explore, and experience the language—not just memorise it.

Benefits for Students

By learning French and Mandarin, students develop:

  • Multilingual communication skills
  • Confidence to study and work internationally
  • Stronger academic profiles for universities
  • Broader cultural perspectives
  • Future-ready employability

Our Vision

St. Joan’s School believes that languages build bridges. Through French and Mandarin, we nurture students who are not only academically strong but also global thinkers, respectful communicators, and future leaders.
