St. Joan’s School, one of the top ICSE schools in Kolkata, continues to uphold its reputation for academic excellence and innovation. Known for pioneering the introduction of robotics in its school curriculum—a visionary initiative led by our founder Principal, Debjani Ghosh—St. Joan’s has set a benchmark in future-ready education. Our collaboration with GETC Guangzhou for Robotics underscores our commitment to preparing students for the technological advancements that are reshaping the world of work.
In the Inter-School Robotics Championship 2024 (ROBOVILLA), organized by CISCE and I-Hub Foundations for Cobotics (IHFC), IIT Delhi, St. Joan’s students demonstrated their prowess. The competition’s theme, “Use of Robots in the Construction Industry,” tasked participants with designing a robot capable of assisting in house construction.
St. Joan’s Teams:
- Team 1: Exoergic
- Team 2: Synergy
- Team 3: St. Joan’s Innovators
Out of 1,000 schools invited to participate across India, 480 teams advanced to the preliminary round, including all three teams from St. Joan’s. The challenge was to build a line follower robotic car, which all our teams successfully completed.
Competition Highlights:
- Stage 1: Design submission round — all three St. Joan’s teams advanced.
- Stage 2: Teams demonstrated a robot’s picking and pushing mechanism. Teams Synergy and St. Joan’s Innovators cleared this round.
Zonal Round:
Held at La Martiniere for Girls School, 30 teams from Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal competed. Both Synergy and St. Joan’s Innovators reached the second round, with Team Synergy emerging as one of six teams selected for the finals. Team Synergy also won the Best Robot Design award.
Finals:
Among the 24 teams that advanced to the national finals in Hyderabad (representing all zones—East, West, North, and South), Team Synergy from St. Joan’s ranks in the top 2% of participants.

St. Joan’s School Hosts Distinguished Delegation from China to Celebrate Tagore’s Legacy and Foster Cultural Exchange
9th October, 2024
St. Joan’s School proudly welcomed an esteemed delegation from China, led by Professor Dong YouChen, as part of a significant event to strengthen educational and cultural ties between India and China. The delegation, which included distinguished linguists Wang QinGang, Li Jinyun, He Xiaoxuan, Tan Yongmei, and Dr. Zhu Xuan from the Center for Indian Studies at Shenzhen University (SZU), marks a key moment in the exchange of knowledge and culture between the two nations.
During the event, Professor Dong YouChen presented Principal Debjani Ghosh with a selection of his literary works. As a renowned expert on Rabindranath Tagore, Prof. Dong has translated several of Tagore’s most significant works into Chinese, including Noukadubi, Ghare Baire, Bou Thakuranir Haat, and Rajarshi. His translations, along with his comprehensive biography of Tagore, have been monumental in introducing Tagore’s legacy to Chinese readers. Prof. Dong’s ongoing project of translating Tagore’s complete works into 24 volumes further underscores his dedication to fostering a deeper cultural connection.
In a separate presentation, Dr. Zhu Xuan and the delegates from Shenzhen University shared news about the university’s China Centre for Indian Studies, which houses a bronze statue of Rabindranath Tagore, gifted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The statue serves as a symbol of the enduring cultural relationship between India and China, and SZU continues to play an active role in promoting these ties.
The event began with a warm welcome address by Vice Principal Lucia Gupta, who emphasized the importance of cultural exchange, particularly in light of the centenary of Tagore’s first visit to China in 1924. Principal Debjani Ghosh later felicitated the delegation, celebrating the continued collaboration between the two nations in the fields of education, linguistics, and culture.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice Principal Lucia Gupta noted, “This year marks 100 years since Tagore’s first visit to China, and the profound impact his work has had on Chinese literature and culture. We are deeply honored to celebrate this legacy with such a distinguished delegation.”
St. Joan’s School has long been committed to fostering transnational education. The school’s Mandarin program, which provides students with valuable language skills, is just one example of its dedication to global learning. This visit by the Chinese delegation highlights the school’s mission to continue building bridges between cultures and expanding opportunities for its students to engage in meaningful exchanges.

CISCE Framework Represents a Transformative Step to Modernise Education in India: Dr. Joseph Emmanuel – Chief Executive & Secretary, Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)
Q. What is the core educational philosophy of the CISCE board, and how is it reflected in the daily practices of schools?
The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations is committed to serving the nation’s children through high-quality educational endeavors, empowering them to contribute towards a humane, just, and pluralistic society, and promoting introspective living by creating exciting learning opportunities with a commitment to excellence.
The daily practices for the affiliated schools are driven by the ethos of CISCE, which allows schools to evolve their own niche while maintaining trust and fair play.
Schools are given the freedom to experiment with new ideas and practices to celebrate diversity and plurality, along with motivating all pupils towards the cultivation of excellence in learning and building constitutional and cultural values.
The CISCE schools follow the holistic curriculum provided by the board that ensures inclusion and equity in classroom engagement through activity-based learning and multimodal assessments.
Q. What distinguishes the CISCE curriculum from other prevalent boards in India, such as CBSE, IB, and IGCSE?
The curriculum emphasizes the all-round development of students. A component of internal assessment (project work) is an integral part of all subjects at the ICSE level. In addition, at the ICSE level, students are required to compulsorily study a skill-based subject. This provides students with an opportunity to not only acquire knowledge but also learn other essential life skills such as creative thinking and analytical skills, teamwork, communication, public speaking, time management, and critical thinking. The Council makes available a basket of subjects from which the students can select subjects of their choice across the boundaries of Humanities, Commerce, and Science, in keeping with their aptitude and ability. The curriculum also focuses on enhancing language proficiency for effective communication, creative writing, and critical thinking.

Until now at St. Joan’s School, Robotics was integrated in the Physics and Computer Science curriculum and student’s showcased their work during the Annual Physics (EXORGIC) and Computer Science (CYBERSCAPE) exhibition creating drones, remote control cars etc.
Moving forward, Robotics will be an independent subject, have it’s dedicated laboratory and detailed curriculum with a multidisciplinary approach covering computer programming, physics, mechanics and technology and will be offered to students from Class III.
It will require, students to think outside the box and become creative thinkers. In the lab, student’s learning will be experiential through hands on fun filled activities which are interactive and we are certain, this will make learning enjoyable.
The goal of the Robotics laboratory, is to expose and prepare students for 21st century skills, from a young age.
In the Robotics lab, students will be able to use various latest electronic gadgets, processors, motors, controllers, sensors and computer software, to give their thoughts a structure. They will use models, Arduino’s to design and execute their ideas, creating real life projects and Robotic system.
The curriculum of the Robotics Laboratory, has integrated machine learning (ML), Artificial intelligence (AI), Mechanics, Programming and computing. It is STEM based and has been designed, with an aim to enhance and support students’ skills, by boosting their knowledge, through the design, construction, assembly, and operation of robots. Students will be able to use the 3D Printer, to create life like models.
As St. Joan’s School cerebrates 25 glorious years of excellence we are sure this brand new Robotics Laboratory will be a feast for our young inquisitive and innovative minds.
